You know when you scroll on BookTok, and you see a book. It looks interesting, and people are ranting and raving, or going through an emotional rollercoaster. Truly, deep down inside, you don’t want to believe in the hype. But then you end up at Barnes & Noble and actually buy said book. Then you read said book, and, well… BookTok was right.
“The Last Letter” by Rebecca Yarros is nothing short of an emotional journey. From start to finish, “The Last Letter” brings a romantic story of two pen pals who ultimately find out that with each other, they can get through this thing called life.
Throughout his life, Beckett Gentry, call sign “Chaos”, was a soldier who had everything to gain and nothing to lose. His friend, Ryan, gives him the advice to write to Ella, Ryan’s sister, to gain some sort of Human connection outside his squad. Reluctantly, after a few weeks, Chaos caves in and reads the letter Ella had sent him. It was at that moment that he knew he had found a friend. After tragedy strikes, Chaos finds himself going to Ella’s hometown, Telluride, to fulfill a private mission he promised to complete. Help Ella anyway that he can. Throughout his stay, he grows closer to Ella, her twins, Colt and Maisie, and those who help around Ella’s resort. As time passes by, Ella lets her guard down, allows Chaos to help her, and also becomes a supportive pillar in raising the twins. As always, not all stories have a happy ending. The two of them find themselves at odds when Chaos’ past catches up to him. Leaving Ella to find her way without him while trying to navigate her new feelings for Chaos.
When I say this book broke me, I 100% MEAN I WAS A MESS! I WORE BLACK FOR TWO WEEKS STRAIGHT. I WAS A DEPRESSO EXPRESSO. “The Last Letter” brought me to tears, and I really wish I could get my feelings back. Rebecca wrote such a captivating love story, but also brought out a family story that was so wholesome to read. The way Beckett and Ella’s love story is like a romantic playlist. A mixture of upbeat love songs, with a few sad girl songs to give it some drama, and the last few are a mixture of warm and fuzzy songs that make you remember special memories that are in your heart. The raw emotion in this book is very intense. You’re hit with so much heartbreak within the first few chapters, and you think you’re good. Sure, there’s a little sadness in between the books. BUT THEN YOU GET TO THE LAST 7 OR SO CHAPTERS, AND IT’S LIKE SOMEONE JUST RIPPED YOUR HEART OUT! This book needs a warning sticker on it and a complimentary box of tissues.
I HIGHLY recommend reading this book. Again! I am warning you right now, as you read this post: YOU WILL NEED TISSUE. You will be a mess, questioning life or something really important to you. But I promise you this is worth it all!!!
UNTIL MY NEXT POST! Don’t forget that happiness is in the little things you do to make this world a better place. Be kind to yourself and be kind to others… and, as always, look out for yourself and one another.
